Abstract

Violent robbery is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of criminal behavior in the history of human societies. This article adopts a historical perspective to examine the evolution of this type of crime, from medieval highway robbers to contemporary armed offenders. It analyzes the factors contributing to both the emergence and decline of violent robbery and demonstrates that although modern security structures and technological advancements have led to a relative reduction in its occurrence, it continues to represent a serious threat in many parts of the world. The article further provides a process-oriented analysis of violent robberies by identifying and explaining five key stages: target selection, creation of surprise, victim control, acquisition of property, and escape. This stage-based approach to criminal conduct facilitates the identification of intervention points and supports the development of effective preventive and repressive strategies. Finally, by focusing on offenders’ behavioral patterns and examining criminogenic environments, the study proposes a number of measures aimed at reducing this form of criminality.
